JR&Co has been recognised at the Recorra Recycling and Circularity Awards with two silver awards.

  • Best Sustainability Engagement Programme
  • Individual Waste Warrior of the Year, awarded to Lauren Hanley, our Business Support Services Director

That’s the headline. But it’s not really the point.

These awards recognise something more important: not just what we do internally, but the standards we bring to our clients’ sites every day.

Turning sustainability into practical results

Sustainability can often feel abstract. Targets, policies and reports.

But on site, it usually comes down to something simpler.

Are people doing the right thing, consistently, without having to think too hard about it?

That’s what we’ve been working on.

At our Head Office, we’ve built a system that makes waste easy to get right. More recycling streams, clearer set-ups, fewer chances to get it wrong. Then we back that up with practical engagement, things like waste sorting sessions, site visits, and hands-on activities that actually stick.

Nothing complicated. Just well thought through, and done properly.

Why clients feel the difference

The important part is that this doesn’t stay at Head Office.

It carries through to client sites:

  • Clearer waste systems that reduce contamination
  • Better segregation that improves recycling performance
  • More engaged teams who understand what good looks like
  • Practical ideas that clients can adopt with confidence

So clients don’t just get a cleaner space. They get a workplace that runs better, with less waste, fewer issues, and more consistency.

The role of leadership

Lauren’s award is really about that consistency.

Setting standards. Paying attention to detail. And making sure things actually happen, not just get talked about.

It’s also about bringing people with you. Because none of this works unless teams are engaged and understand why it matters.

That’s where the real change comes from.

What this says about how we work

There isn’t a grand programme sitting behind this. It’s more straightforward than that.

It’s about doing the small things properly. Every day. On every site.

  • Putting the right systems in place.
  • Keeping them simple.
  • And making sure people care enough to follow them.

That’s what adds up over time.

What’s next

There’s still plenty to improve. There always is.

But the direction is clear: keep things practical and keep them consistent.

We’ll continue to refine our approach, work closely with our partners, and help our clients improve their own sustainability performance.

Because when that happens, the results take care of themselves.

2025 has been a year of meaningful recognition for JR&Co. Not because we chase awards for their own sake, but because they reflect the care, commitment and undivided attention our people bring to their work every day.

Across sustainability, environmental responsibility and service excellence, these awards recognise teams and projects that quietly raise standards across the business.

Recognised for sustainability leadership

One of the highlights of the year was our Business Support Services Team being named Team of the Year at the National Sustainability Awards. The award recognised the team’s sustained contribution to embedding sustainability into how JR&Co operates, from systems and reporting to everyday decision making.

We were also named winners of the Environmental (ESG) Award at the BICSc Awards. This recognised our responsible and ethical approach to cleaning, and our continued investment in people, processes and sustainable practices across the business.

Shortlisted for positive climate action

Our work on Sustainable Synergy was shortlisted at the IWFM Impact Awards in the Positive Climate Action category. The project brings together waste reduction, smarter resource use and practical collaboration, showing how focused change can deliver real environmental impact.

Gold recognition for innovation and waste management

At the Green Apple Awards, JR&Co received two Gold Awards. These recognised excellence in innovation and waste management, and reinforced the value of taking a long-term, joined-up approach to sustainability rather than chasing quick wins.

Looking ahead to 2026

The year closed with further recognition as JR&Co was named a finalist at the Kimberly-Clark Professional Golden Service Awards. We were shortlisted in two categories, Sustainability Leadership and Going the Extra Mile, with the awards taking place in 2026.

What this recognition means to us

These awards matter because they reflect the work happening behind the scenes. Thoughtful planning. Consistent standards. Teams who care about doing things properly, even when no one is watching.

They also reinforce something we have always believed. When you support people properly and give them the space to focus, better outcomes follow.

We are proud of the recognition. Even more proud of the people behind it.

“The evidence shows a strong link between ESG performance and financial performance… A strong ESG proposition correlates with a higher equity valuation… and can also translate into higher returns on capital.” The CEO Guide to ESG, McKinsey & Company, 2023

In facilities management, sustainability is no longer a separate initiative—it’s a core component of operational excellence. It’s about finding smart, strategic ways to reduce your environmental impact while also improving efficiency, saving costs, and enhancing service delivery.

At JR&Co, our practice has always been rooted in care: care for our people and care for the quality of our work. Yet, we knew we needed to do more. This conviction spurred a holistic overhaul of our practice, which has since delivered measurable results and recognition: earning us two (more) Green Apple Awards, a highly coveted Environmental/ESG award from BICSc, Team of the Year at the National Sustainability Awards, receiving approval from SBTI for carbon reduction goals, and strengthening our commitment to social and environmental performance with B Corp certification.

Our success shows how, with a unified approach, you can achieve your own sustainability goals while delivering a more efficient and reliable service for your business. Here’s our blueprint.

1. Taking Action: Our Holistic Approach

Our journey towards a more responsible business began with a fundamental belief: that we could achieve a big impact by combining big projects with small, consistent actions. This thinking started with two simple questions: how can we address our largest environmental impacts, and where are our greatest operational inefficiencies?

A study led by our ESG expert, Vânia Borges, helped us collect data and identify where we could make the most impactful improvements. This led us to three key projects that were never viewed in isolation:

  • a transition to digital site files, which reduced our paper consumption carbon footprint by 82.4%;
  • a move to 100% renewable energy at our head office;
  • the electrification of our vehicle fleet, which ahead of its completion in May 2025, had already achieved a 75% reduction in our fleet’s carbon footprint.

We’ve even overhauled our waste management at head office, with some assistance from Recorra, by introducing multiple waste streams on top of the usual general waste and mixed recycling. We now recycle everything from coffee grounds to batteries & vapes to flexible plastics helping to increase our overall recycle rate.

This unified initiative has not only delivered results but has also earned us multiple award nominations and wins this year. Including: IWFM and wins at BICSc, Green Apple and National Sustainability Awards. This approach shows how connecting all areas of the business can drive meaningful, company-wide change.

2. Building the Foundation: An Objective Framework for Long-Term Improvement

While we’ve always been driven by an internal legacy of care, we knew we needed an objective framework to provide a clear path for continuous improvement. We chose to pursue B Corp certification because it is a wide-ranging standard that looks beyond just the planet to also consider our people, our community, and our governance.

Becoming a certified B Corp gave us a benchmark to ensure we were as good as we said we were. This rationale is also why we sought approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for our carbon-reduction goals: to reach Net Zero by 2040. This is a commitment that will guide our progress for years to come, but given all the work we’ve already done, we know it is not insurmountable.

3. Sustaining Success: The Heart of Our Project – Our Team

A crucial part of this journey was our people. Change can only happen with buy-in from the whole team. We focused on bringing everyone together through a range of initiatives, including comprehensive training and head office open days. Over time, the lessons learned and the experience shared between central teams and operations have fostered a sense of togetherness that has become embedded in our practice.

We hold regular lunch and learns with external experts who help us improve our own and our clients’ practices.

We celebrate the different cultures that make up our workforce, and our teams regularly engage in volunteering days to end food poverty in London and litter-picking in our local area.

We also started the Henry Garden Project, a fun and sustainable initiative where we grow vegetables to feed our team. In a true example of the circular economy, we recycle decommissioned Henry vacuum cleaners as planters. We’ve also found that more informal approaches, such as fun games to sort waste into the correct places, are highly effective in making sustainability a collective, rewarding effort for everyone.

This culture is nurtured by the team at head office, who contribute so much to making it a great place to work—from tending to the plants and preparing food, to generally helping each other out.

The Value Exchange: Responsible Practice as Your Competitive Edge

The greatest advantage of our approach is that the benefits are shared directly with our clients. Our operational improvements—such as our paperless system and electrified fleet—actively reduce the carbon footprint of the services we provide, which demonstrably assists client’s own ESG reporting and targets.

We further support client goals by sourcing product options that combine quality, affordability, and ethical choice without compromising effectiveness. These include Odorbac Tec 4 (a fully biodegradable cleaner), and products from the social enterprise Amplify Goods, proving that responsible sourcing can even deliver superior results.

Our commitment to rigorous, responsible cleaning flows naturally from JR&Co’s long history of care for quality and our people. So, not only have we taken a leap forward in ESG, we’re further assured clients that we act with the utmost care.

For Facilities Managers committed to achieving ambitious ESG targets, a similar holistic approach is key to taking a significant leap forward. Think of it this way: your commitment to quality business practices helps your facility not only make an ESG leap forward, but can help you clearly stand out in the market.

Looking Forward

As proud as we are of our achievements, we’re well aware this is a continuous journey, and we’re committed to this path. We believe that by sharing our blueprint, we can inspire other businesses to join us in contributing to a collective impact on environmental stewardship. This isn’t about competition; it’s about leading the way in responsible cleaning and making the sector better as a whole.

Ultimately, our commitment proves that what’s good for ESG is unequivocally good for business. Responsible practice has been a powerful driver of business value for us, and we’re confident it can be for you, too.

We’re proud to announce that JR&Co has once again been recognised at the International Green Apple Environment Awards for the second year running.

From more than 700 global entries, two of our initiatives stood out. Our Henry Garden project and our Waste Management Excellence programme were both honoured, placing us firmly among the world’s leading environmental champions.

This recognition matters. Because for us, sustainability isn’t a marketing message or a side project. It is woven into the way we work. From the way we train and manage our teams to the choices we make about materials, methods and partnerships, every decision is made with people and planet in mind.

Our thanks go to Vania, our Quality, Sustainability and Environment Manager, and Lauren, our Business Support Services Director, for leading the charge. And to the whole JR&Co team for turning commitment into action every day.

Sustainability isn’t just what we do. It is how we clean.

On Saturday 19 July, the JR&Co community came together in Battersea Park to celebrate 31 years of delivering cleaning with care, professionalism and pride.

The weather tried to get in the way. The skies were grey, the rain showed up early, and train cancellations made travel difficult. But the spirit of our people shone through. Those who came brought energy, good humour and plenty of smiles. And together, we turned a rainy Saturday into a celebration worth remembering.

There was food, music and dancing. There were wet shoes, shared stories and a real sense of connection. This was more than a party. It was a thank you to the 1,300 cleaners who give their undivided attention every day. It was a chance to look back at what we’ve built and look ahead to what comes next.

We want to thank everyone who made it possible.

Most of all, thank you to everyone who came. You reminded us that no matter the weather, when we come together as a team, we create something special.

It has happened again. JR&Co is a finalist.

We are delighted to announce that our Sustainable Synergy project has been shortlisted for the Positive Climate Action category at the 2025 IWFM Impact Awards. This recognition celebrates the work we have been doing to reduce our environmental footprint while raising the bar for service quality.

Over the past year we have taken bold steps to rethink how we work. We have eliminated paper site files and replaced them with QR code access. Our head office now runs on 100% renewable energy. Our vehicle fleet moved entirely to electric. These actions are part of our wider net zero strategy, which aims to make sustainability an everyday reality, not just a statement.

This shortlisting is about more than the changes themselves. It is about the impact. Less waste. Lower emissions. Smarter operations. And a cleaner, greener future for our clients, our people and the city we serve.

We are proud of what we have achieved, but this is only the beginning. We will keep pushing forward, finding better ways to work that benefit both people and planet without compromising on the quality and attention our clients count on.

A huge thank you to our team, clients and partners for helping make this happen. Your support and shared commitment to positive change make all the difference.

We are proud to share a major commitment on our journey to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Our near term science based emissions reduction targets have now been officially approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This global body champions ambitious climate action in line with the Paris Agreement, and our targets are aligned with its most ambitious 1.5°C pathway.

This means we have committed to reducing our absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42 percent by 2030 from a 2023 base year. We have also pledged to measure and reduce our scope 3 emissions across our full value chain.

Our ambition does not stop there. By 2040 we plan to reach net zero across scopes 1, 2 and 3, cutting total emissions by 90 percent. This goes beyond aspiration. It is a clear, measurable commitment to change.

What this means in practical terms

For JR&Co, this commitment is not abstract. It means switching our entire fleet to electric vehicles, reducing electric consumption, continuing to run our head office on 100 percent renewable energy, making every site we operate as paper-free as possible, choosing suppliers with strong sustainability credentials and working closely with clients to reduce the environmental impact of their cleaning services. It also means looking at every stage of our operations, from how equipment is sourced and maintained to how waste is managed, and making better choices that add up to real carbon savings.

As Vânia Borges, our Quality Sustainability and Environment Manager, explains: “Our science-based targets represent a clear commitment to measurable, time-bound climate action, with every step monitored and shared openly as we progress toward a more sustainable future.” That is exactly what this approval represents: transparency, accountability and an acceleration of our progress towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.

We also want to thank Vânia and Lauren, our Business Support Services Director, for their dedication in bringing this achievement to life. Their work ensures that sustainability at JR&Co is more than a statement. It is embedded in how we operate every day.

Undivided attention to our people, our clients and our planet is what sets JR&Co apart. This milestone is one more step in that journey, and we are committed to many more.

We are delighted to announce that JR&Co has been shortlisted not once, but twice, at the prestigious National Sustainability Awards!

This incredible recognition is a testament to our unwavering commitment to responsible and sustainable practices, driving meaningful change within our industry.

Our first nomination is in the highly competitive Transformation category. This shortlisting recognises the holistic and measurable progress we have made in our sustainability journey, from pioneering innovative award-winning projects to achieving our B Corp certification. It highlights how we’re leading by example and making a real impact.

Adding to our pride, our dedicated Business Support Services team has also been shortlisted for Team of the Year. This nomination celebrates their exceptional work in fostering a culture of continuous improvement that benefits our people, our valued clients, and the planet. Their dedication is instrumental in our ongoing success.

We extend a huge shout out to Lauren, Vânia, Lindy, Olivia, Grace, Carlos, and Bladimir. Their hard work and commitment shine through every day, and this recognition belongs to them.

While recognition is never our sole goal, being named a finalist twice at the National Sustainability Awards is a wonderful validation of the work we’ve done and an affirmation that we are firmly on the right track as a leader in responsible cleaning. We look forward to the awards ceremony and continuing our journey to a more sustainable future.

We’re excited to share that Julius Rutherfoord & Co. (JR&Co) has been named a finalist in the Environmental (ESG) category of the 2025 BICSc Awards.

This shortlisting recognises the practical, day-to-day ways we’re working to clean responsibly and reduce our impact. Over the past year, we’ve introduced paperless site files that have cut waste and improved efficiency, transitioned our head office to 100% renewable energy, and completed the move to an electric fleet across our operations. We’ve also looked at the bigger picture – working closely with local suppliers and supporting circular economy initiatives to reduce single-use plastics.

We know that sustainability isn’t a box to tick; it’s part of every decision we make. Being a finalist in the BICSc Awards feels like recognition for everyone here at JR&Co who’s helped us keep that promise.

We’re looking forward to the awards ceremony later this year – and to sharing more about the ways we’re bringing sustainability into the everyday.

The landscape of waste management is changing. By 31 March 2025, the Simpler Recycling legislative reforms will be in full swing, requiring businesses across England to adopt standardised recycling practices. This isn’t just about ticking a box; it’s about creating a sustainable future and avoiding potential penalties. Let’s break down what these changes mean for your business.

What You Need to Know

The Simpler Recycling reforms are being phased in, with larger businesses required to comply first. The goal is to ensure consistent recycling practices nationwide. At a minimum, your business will need to segregate the following materials:

  • Dry Mixed Recycling: Including glass bottles and jars, metal cans and tins, plastic bottles, pots, tubs, and trays, and paper and cardboard.
  • Food Waste: All food waste, including peelings, plate scrapings, and out-of-date food.
  • General Waste: For non-recyclable items.

It is important to remember that these are minimum requirements, and more specific waste streams may be required.

How This Impacts Your Business

The Simpler Recycling reforms will necessitate significant operational adjustments for your business. To comply, you’ll need to:

  • Implement Segregated Waste Streams: Provide clearly labelled, separate bins for dry mixed recycling, food waste, and general waste.
  • Establish Collection Protocols: Ensure these materials are collected and processed through appropriate channels, including recycling, anaerobic digestion, or composting.
  • Invest in Staff Training: Conduct comprehensive training programs to educate employees on proper waste segregation procedures.
  • Allocate Resources: Prepare for the financial and logistical demands of new waste management infrastructure and processes.
  • Mitigate Compliance Risks: Understand that non-compliance can result in substantial fines and potential business disruptions.
  • Enhance Brand Image: Recognise the positive impact of effective waste management on your brand reputation and potential to attract environmentally conscious customers.

Planning ahead is crucial to ensure a smooth transition.

Remember that failure to comply could result in fines, so it’s important to get this right. At Julius Rutherfoord & Co. we’d be happy to help you achieve that.

JR&Co’s Role in a Cleaner, Compliant Environment

Beyond avoiding penalties, maintaining a clean and hygienic workplace is essential to employee well-being and productivity, and these new regulations directly impact this.
